“Change is the law of life, and those who only look to the past or the present are certain to miss the future.” – John F. Kennedy.
Why must you adapt to change?
“Your life doesn’t get better by accident; it gets better by change.” —Jim Rohn.
Change can enter our lives through crisis, choice, or chance. We face a choice in both situations – do we embrace the change? I believe it’s better to be prepared for change because it gives us more control over how we respond to life’s changes.
When you are unprepared and resistant to change, you have no control or choice over how you live your life. You end up living reactively rather than proactively enabling change. We cannot avoid unexpected events (crises) as they challenge us and push us out of our comfort zones. Ignoring or avoiding these challenges denies us the opportunity to learn and grow.
Our resilience can only grow stronger when we embrace change and positively manage these challenges rather than avoiding and ignoring the opportunities that change can bring to our lives. There is no escaping the impact that change can have on your life. Managing change is critical to living a life where you survive and thrive.
FIVE STRATEGIES TO ADAPT TO CHANGE
1. Change your mindset – Choose your power
We prefer to stay in our comfort zone because it’s familiar to our subconscious. Change can be difficult because our subconscious resists the unknown. When we face the challenges of change, our fears and self-limiting beliefs come into play. Change can be disruptive and make us feel uncomfortable and scared, but we have the power to choose how we respond to it. While we can’t control the events that cause change, we can control our reactions. By exercising our power of choice and focusing on adapting positively to change, we can become more resilient to its impact on our lives.
2. Find meaning in life
Understanding what’s important in life will help you find purpose and direction. Having a clear purpose and meaning will give you focus and help you manage change. Without purpose or meaning, you may stay in your comfort zone. Having purpose and meaning in life gives you the courage to step out of your comfort zone, where you can find change and opportunities.
3. Let go of your regrets
Regrets can hold you back and affect how you respond to change. Letting go of regrets is essential for moving forward. The events happening now are opportunities, so focusing on the past may cause you to miss out on what’s happening in the present and what could happen in the future. You can’t change the past, so it’s important to let it go. Your only control is over the choices you make in your present and future lives. A helpful exercise for dealing with regrets is to write one regret on each balloon, then let them fly away. When the balloons disappear, say goodbye to that regret. This simple exercise can help you deal with the regrets you’ve accumulated in your life.
4. Write a list of scary things to do – Then do them
Change can be intimidating because it involves stepping out of our comfort zone and into the unknown. Training our subconscious mind to become comfortable with this process is important. Please list things that scare you but you want to do, then create a plan to accomplish them. Challenge yourself, have fun, and get used to fear and uncertainty.
5. Focus on living a balanced and healthy life
“Keeping the body in good health is a task… otherwise we will not be able to keep the mind healthy and clear.” – Buddha
Living a balanced and healthy active life builds in us resilience and the ability to successfully manage the disruptions that change can have on our lives.
Stress is a normal reaction to daily life changes and challenges. In the short term, stress can help you perform better under pressure, but ongoing stress can cause problems for your health. Finding positive ways to deal with the stress and pressure we face every day is vital to our physical and emotional survival.
Some healthy lifestyle actions you can use to manage change and disruption in your life successfully are:
– Eat a healthy diet.
– Exercise regularly.
– Reduce caffeine and sugar.
– Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.
– Get enough sleep.
– Practice meditation regularly.
– Take some time to disconnect from technology.
– Learn to relax and have fun.
– Connect with others. Spend time with people who have a positive impact on your life.
You can do many things to live a healthy, balanced life. You must commit to activities that enable you to be resilient, optimistic, physically and mentally fit to work successfully through the impact that change can have on your life.”
